An Indolent Presentation of Gliomatosis Cerebri in an Elderly Patient: Posterior Fossa Decompression Prior to Treatment
نویسنده
چکیده
Gliomatosis cerebri (GC) is a rare astrocytic tumor that typically affects multiple lobes of the brain. Due to its insidious nature and atypical symptom presentation, diagnosis is often made late in the course of disease process. To date, no definitive treatment guidelines have been established, and due to its infiltrating pattern, neurosurgical resection of the lesion is generally not feasible. We report a case of a 69-year-old male who initially presented with symptoms similar to normal pressure hydrocephalus. The patient underwent CSF diversion, with an inconclusive tissue biopsy. His symptoms were relieved for more than two years thereafter until he demonstrated worsening of symptoms, with a MRI clearly demonstrating GC. Patients presenting with hydrocephalus and a "full posterior fossa" should be followed carefully for evidence of GC progression. Categories: Neurology, Neurosurgery, Oncology

Gliomatosis cerebri presenting as rapidly progressive dementia and parkinsonism in an elderly woman: a case report
INTRODUCTION Dementia is one of the most important neurological disorders in the elderly. Dementia of tumoral origin is rare and parkinsonism of neoplastic origin is unusual. We herein report a case of gliomatosis cerebri, a very rare brain tumor seldom affecting the elderly, which presented as rapidly progressive dementia and parkinsonism. CASE PRESENTATION An 82-year-old woman very rapidly ...
متن کاملGliomatosis Cerebri Type 1 Mimicking an Ischemic Stroke and Progressing to a Type 2: a Case Study and Literature Review
Aims: To report a rare clinical case of gliomatosis cerebri, which presented with nonspecific clinical, laboratory, and radiological findings. We provide images and stress the importance of differential diagnosis based on imaging, especially magnetic resonance (MR) spectroscopy. Case Presentation: A 73-year-old woman developed a right hemiplegia suggestive of ischemic stroke. Cerebral magnetic ...
متن کاملThe transformation of pediatric gliomatosis cerebri to cerebellar glioblastoma multiforme presenting as supra- and infratentorial acute disseminated encephalomyelitis. Case report.
Cerebellar glioblastoma multiforme (GBM) is a rare entity in adults and an extremely rare entity in children. Approximately 30 cases have been reported in the literature. The authors report the case of a histologically confirmed cerebellar GBM presenting initially as supra- and infratentorial gliomatosis cerebri. Acute disseminated encephalomyelitis had been diagnosed in the patient and that di...
متن کاملGliomatosis cerebri type II: two case reports
INTRODUCTION TWO TYPES OF GLIOMATOSIS CEREBRI EXIST: Type I and Type II. We report the results of a histological and genetic study of two cases of gliomatosis cerebri Type II, correlating these results with therapy and prognosis. CASE PRESENTATION Two patients, a 52-year-old man (Patient 1) and a 76-year-old man (Patient 2) with gliomatosis cerebri II were admitted to our institution; they un...
متن کاملGliomatosis cerebri mimicking chemotherapy-induced leukoencephalopathy in a patient with non-Hodgkin's lymphoma.
Patients with hematological malignancies may develop white matter lesions, which are usually associated with chemotherapy. Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) is the imaging modality of choice for identifying chemotherapy-induced, or "toxic", leukoencephalopathy. Brain biopsy in patients with hematological malignancies suspected of sustaining toxic leukoencephalopathy has rarely been performed, be...
